Yesterday, I had the good fortune to sit next to Fred Wilson and hear his ideas about making a difference. Before the talk started I got to chat with him about my thoughts to take Loud Feed Open Source and he offered some very encouraging advice. It is great for me to be able to leverage being back in NYC, my home town. The Music Industry has a lot to learn from the game changing technologies that companies like Boxee funded by Fred Wilson are creating.

I just spent the previous two days at the Open Video Conference, which took place at NYU. This was an historic moment. From artists to programmers, a wealth of information was presented and discussed that is just the beginning for this group of people who came here from across the planet and will continue to interact through the Open Video Alliance. The alliance is putting together the principles of an open video ecosystem that will form a technical roadmap for a more interoperable and decentralized online video environment. Over and over, I kept hearing sentences, where I would think about simply changing the word “video” to “music.” (more…)

If you’re here at Midem, come to R36.18. We’ll have free cocktails from 5 – 7 pm. It is day one of the show. I got to talk with Ian Rogers of Topspin last at Morrison’s, an Irish pub here in Cannes. He and others like my idea of starting a music oriented “barcamp” or “unconference.” I’ll be starting more posts on that topic shortly. The video is simply a quick pan of the A2IM pavilion at Midem.

Please excuse the shakey cam as I put my Sanyo Xacti on the stage to stop the podium from blocking the view of Ted Cohen.

Reporting from Midem, Cannes, 2008

Posted by dr.ron on January 26th, 2008

I recently joined A2IM (American Association for Independent Music). They have a booth for members here at Midem and (yeah!) free wi-fi! Internet access has been spotty for the Midemnet conference. The signal fades as you leave the lobby and enter the auditorium where the main talks are happening. I’ll be reporting on the great sessions and videotaping others, so you don’t just get me saying hello here. Stay tuned, the most important people in the music industry are here.
